After replacing its original online gameplay solution with its new Multi-Matching Broadband service, Capcom has closed down the servers for its first round of PlayStation 2 online games, the publisher announced today. The PS2 titles supported by Capcom's first collaboration with telecommunications company KDDI, which required a third-party USB model for online play, are now offline-only.
The list of games is as follows:
Auto Modellista (PS2)
Capcom Vs. SNK 2 (PS2/DC)
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (PS2)
Mobile Suit Gundam Federation Vs. Zeon DX (PS2/DC)
While it was a rather crude solution, requiring third-party hardware and supporting only 56K modem speeds, Capcom's first efforts at PS2 online gaming were unique in offering cross-platform compatibility. The Dreamcast and PS2 versions of both Capcom Vs. SNK 2 and Federation Vs. Zeon could play against each other.
Capcom's current generation of online games, Monster Hunter and company, will of course remain playable online for the foreseeable future through the new MMBB service.
