Square Enix Release Dates, E3 Lineup

David Smith

Square Enix today announced its tentative E3 lineup, and it's quite the eclectic selection of games. Though its efforts are still focused on PlayStation 2, the bipartite publisher has games in the works for multiple handheld platforms, a Final Fantasy XI expansion for the PC, and of course, its long-awaited Final Fantasy VII DVD movie.

The complete lineup is as follows:

DVD Final Fantasy VII Advent Children

Game Boy Advance Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

PlayStation 2 Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia Final Fantasy XII Front Mission 4 Fullmetal Alchemist Kingdom Hearts II Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

PC Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia

Mobile Beyond Crisis -- Final Fantasy VII Brave Shot Dragon Quest Final Fantasy

None of the games announced for display are completely new, although a few are now confirmed for North American release. Final Fantasy XII is coming stateside some time in 2005 -- not within the year as some had expected -- while Fullmetal Alchemist, the PS2 3D action game based on the Japanese animated series of the same name, is coming to North America next spring. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for Game Boy Advance, however, is due out within 2004, in the fall.

So far without official North American release dates are Kingdom Hearts II for PS2 and the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children DVD movie. The former has no release date in Japan, while the latter is due for release in Japan some time this summer.

Square Enix also plans to display some of the mobile content it's developed for Japanese and American cellular phones. The 8-bit Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest remakes for NTT DoCoMo's 900i series will be available for American players to try (although they're not available for any American phone models). In addition, Square Enix plans to display a new mobile project in video form: Before Crisis -- Final Fantasy VII. Exactly what that might be we don't know, but we'll find out at the show.

In addition to what it announced today, Square Enix has a few more surprises up its sleeve for E3. Expect a complete accounting of debuting games next Monday, when Square Enix puts on its press conference in conjunction with the "Dear Friends" orchestral conference.
